THE RECTOR WRITES

Dear Friends,

As we have been preparing our Confirmation candidates recently for May 9th, we have been reflecting together on the essentials of the Christian life. At the end of the questions the Archbishop puts to them he will ask: "Will you seek God's help to keep this faith through prayer, the reading of the scriptures and regular sharing in the Holy Communion?"

This is a question that we could all ask ourselves. What about our own faith and our own spiritual life? Are we regular in prayer? Do we read the Bible daily or weekly with the help of notes? And is our Churchgoing our number one priority on Sundays?

Ask ourselves the opposite questions: When was the last time we set aside some time and space for God in prayer or Bible reading? How often do we use the Church as a social club: an entertainment for our children? Do we walk away when our children grow up? Do we come to Church when there is nothing else to do? Following Jesus in the power of the Spirit does ask of us commitment. If we really claim to be Christians then we have to say that God's claim on our lives comes above everything else. If our attendance becomes sporadic when our children become teenagers then the message goes out to them loud and clear: the Christian faith is for children and we never really believed in it in the first place. Questions well worth thinking about as we head towards the summer. Don't take a holiday from God.

Vocation
On May 18th we look forward to hearing Aisling Shine preach to us as she prepares for her ordination as a deacon on June 22nd. Aisling has been a very committed member of this parish, serving as Churchwarden for a number of years and being involved in every aspect of our community. Her ordination will be a time of great fulfilment and joy not just for her but for the whole parish. We pray for her and her family and the parish of Drumcondra where she will serve. Aisling's commitment to the ordained ministry reminds us that we are all called to serve God in our own place: but it also encourages us to think about whether we too might have calling to the ordained ministry or as a lay reader. If you feel that might be God's calling to you please speak to myself or Sandra at any time.

Thank you
Thanks to everyone who made Holy Week and Easter so special in the parish. Our talented team of musicians - Raymond, Maedhbh and Avril, the flower arrangers Pat and Dorothy and their teams, all the readers and intercessors and to all of you who came each night. At the time of writing we are heading into the annual Easter Vestries: more in the next issue, but meanwhile thank you to all the outgoing wardens Heather, and Hilary, Keith and Melanie, Martha and Hal, and to the two retiring treasurers, Sharon and Edwin for all the superb service and care they have given to the Churches over the years. Their contributions are deeply appreciated by all of us.

Finally, thank you on behalf of Susan and myself for the beautiful gifts that the parishes gave us to mark the tenth anniversaries of our ordination to the priesthood. The black cloak or cappa nigra is a beautiful and very practical gift for the cold winter's days! And the Nicholas Mosse bowl has pride of place on our table!

Yours in his service

Andrew

TEN YEARS ORDAINED AS A PRIEST

The joint vestries of our parishes presented our Rector Rev. Andrew Orr with a Cloak and his wife Rev. Susan Green with a Nicholas Moss bowl to mark the occasion of them both being ordained ten years to the Priesthood. This presentation took place in St. Thomas' Mulhuddart, on Saturday 19th April. On Easter Sunday the Rector modelled this garment as his handed out Easter Eggs after morning service.

LENT

For five consecutive Thursdays, with our neighbouring parish of St Thomas the Apostle (Laurel Lodge), a large group of us met with Fr Wilf Harrington OP to look at the accounts of Jesus' Passion in the four gospels and then at the accounts of the resurrection appearances. Fr Wilf gave us some very stimulating and thought provoking addresses, helping us to see the distinctive emphasis of each of the evangelists. It was an extremely enjoyable series of evenings, and a great privilege to have Fr Wilf with us again.

BOYS BRIGADE NEWS

SCHOOL NEWS

PRINCIPAL RETIRES

It is with deep regret that the Board of Management received the resignation of Lorna Beattie, the Principal who is currently on maternity leave (following the birth of her fourth child, Mark). She has been Principal since 1988 and has made a tremendous contribution to the life of the school in that time, in which time the school has grown enormously and we have succeeded in building the new school extension. Our formal farewell to Lorna will be at the School Closing Service in St Brigid's on Sunday 15th June.
The Rector

MOTHERS' UNION

Our AGM chaired by the Rector was well attended. Reports were given, the accounts were presented and purchases were made at the sale in aid of the Rector's Discretionary fund.

All Ireland Council was held in Castleknock and some members helped with the catering for coffee on arrival and again at lunch time.

The Committee organised the Hunger Lunch on Palm Sunday and members provided soup and sandwiches

Our Branch Outing is to Kilkenny at the end of April and we will be attending the Area service in Skerries in early May. The last event of the session will be the overnight visit of our link Branch, Holywood at the end of May.

Valerie Greene - Hon. Secretary.

YOU CAN CHANGE THE WORLD

Christian Aid Week: 11th - 17th May 2003

Sunday 11th May marks the beginning of a week of prayer, action and giving for Christian Aid, an organisation which works in partnership with local agencies in around 60 countries worldwide.

Coffee Morning in the Parish Centre (10.30am to 12.30pm) on 16th May to raise awareness and funds. Even small amounts of cash can make a difference to our brothers and sisters in the developing world. Here are some examples: Iraq: Christian Aid is already working in northern Iraq, co-operating with the Middle East Council of Churches, providing reception centres with food, fuel, cooking equipment, medicines, tents and blankets. Christian Aid is also funding a mobile water treatment unit, to provide drinking water for up to 200,000 people. In Iraq, just  22 would provide a family with basic shelter.

Sri Lanka: for 7 years Christian Aid has been working with local Rural People's Organisations to alleviate the extreme poverty caused by civil war. In one village alone, there are now 30 wells for 350 families (instead of just one). A life-changing loan to a local family is only  11
Afghanistan: although no longer in our headlines, enormous work is being done to provide education, especially for girls who were denied it under the Taliban. A local Development Foundation publishes children's educational material with a printing press provided by Christian Aid. Schools can only afford one magazine per class, yet it only costs  0.15 to produce each magazine.
Cambodia:
a quarter of all agricultural land is treacherous with landmines and unexploded bombs. Rural training schemes teach villagers literacy and health education, as well as how to rear livestock, and grow fruit and vegetables. But it is a dangerous place. It costs  0.80 and several hours to clear one square metre of a minefield.

BROWNIES AND GUIDES NOTES

Since our last notes a team of our Brownies have taken part in an Eastern Region Table Quiz, our team came two points behind the winners at District level - Congratulations.

Guides are working for Proficiency Badges. We would like to thank Beryl Stone who gave us a most interesting talk on Photography. Some of the girls are doing Photography badge, we are holding a Photographic Competition and entries have to be submitted by early May.

We are still looking for Adult help with Brownies and Guides. It is urgent that we get help.
Pauline McConnell

THE ANGLICAN COMMUNION

The Church of Ireland, as part of the world wide Anglican Communion, has welcomed the 104th Archbishop of Canterbury, who was enthroned in Canterbury Cathedral on 27th February. It is worth noting that it was our Primate, Archbishop Robin Eames, who at that service prayed a blessing over Archbishop Rowan in the name of all Anglicans.

Ten things you didn't know about Rowan Williams:

  • He learnt Russian in 6 months and speaks 7 languages, including Welsh.
  • He was a keen actor at Oxford, starring as Thomas More in A Man for All Seasons.
  • Rowan Williams is unable to drive. He is driven everywhere by his chaplain.
  • He has had curious fashion tastes with a fondness for black berets.
  • He is hard of hearing in one ear.
  • He insists on always travelling second class.
  • He is married to Jane, the daughter of the Rt Rev'd Geoffrey Paul, former Bishop of Bradford and a highly respected evangelical leader.
  • Unlike his predecessor, Dr George Carey who was a passionate Arsenal fan, Dr Williams doesn't support any particular football team.
  • At school, he had a permanent note excusing him from sports.
  • He is very fond of classical music, particularly Baroque and Bach.
(Reprinted from News and Views, Affirming Catholicism.)

Quotes from Rowan Williams
On prayer: "It is probably true that too few Christians pray. Often people are more eager to learn that we think they are, we who are clergy or teachers. And what can we do about it. A number of things I think. We can ask people what they think prayer is; how they do it when they try; and perhaps also try and tease out from that what they think God is. But I think it is remarkable how very often, how easily people will be prepared to learn to keep silence, how to listen. How to be a little bit more at home in their bodies before God. To settle, so as to be quiet, not to be restless, to say a few small and simple words. The Jesus prayer of the Russian Orthodox Church: 'Lord Jesus have mercy on me a sinner'. A phrase from a hymn that you love: 'Jesu, lover of my soul', and just repeat that gently and let it sink in. People will respond to that and find it does make sense and they can do something with it." (Lent Course 2003)

On the Family: "I think there has been a great decline in the sense of the family as a domestic Church. We are all so busy that family life anyway is at a bit of a premium and if we don't even sit down together to watch TV these days, it is not very likely we'll sit down to say matins together. But I think there are things that can be done and I think we ought, all of us, to be looking at the liturgy of the home, the ways in which a little bit of Christian self awareness can come into domestic life. Acclimatise children to lighting a candle on Saturday evening, for prayers, to the expectations you all say prayers on certain occasions, grace at meals. I know this really is a counter cultural thing now, but I believe in it very strongly indeed. It is the sign of acceptance that God is present and welcoming at every moment. So I think there are many simple things we can do there and I hope there will be more and more resources to help us with that." (Reprinted from Anglican World)

MISSION AND OUTREACH

A great total of  1,132.00 was raised for St Anne's Hospital in Liuli, Tanzania, by a Hunger Lunch on Palm Sunday organised by the Mothers' Union. With delicious homemade soups and fresh sandwiches, it was a great occasion. Janet Craven added an ethnic touch to the Parish Centre by wearing a brightly coloured Tanzanian national costume, and bringing along a selection of others for us to try on. Many thanks to all who supported the lunch, and made such a great contribution to our mission project in Liuli.

DAFFODIL DAY

THANK YOU

Dear All

Following our very successful Coffee Morning on Friday 21st May in aid of the Irish Cancer society, 1,181 was donated to their daffodil day fund. Many thanks to all who came along and to those who supported us in any way. A very pleasant morning was had by all.

See you next year
Janet Seaman and Shirley McGuckin.

EASTER VESTRIES

The Clonsilla Easter Vestry took place on Sunday 27th April and the Castleknock and Mulhuddart Easter Vestry took place on Wed 30th April at 8pm. Reports next month.

SUMMER CLUB LEADERS NEEDED

Our ever popular Summer Club takes place this year from Monday 18th to Friday 22nd August 2003 from 10am - 1pm.

Owing to the retirement of two of our main leaders Sheena Cadoo and Jillian Connolly after years of great service, we urgently need more leaders for the week. If you are a student, a parent or can spare the 5 mornings of that week, please contact Rev. Andrew as soon as possible. This is a great ministry to our parish and community and is a tremendously fulfilling experience for the leaders as well as the children. We will train you in what is needed, so don't feel out of your depth….

We would also like to hear from Junior leaders 14+ who could help us for the week...

OMAGH CLERGY VISIT

The tragedy of the Omagh bombing is something most of us don't think about as the newspaper headlines continually move on elsewhere. But there are many clergy of different denominations who continue to deal with the aftermath in Omagh and beyond. On Friday 11th April 17 clergymen from the RC, Church of Ireland, and Presbyterian churches were invited to visit the President Mary McAleese in recognition of their ongoing pastoral work and the immense emotional cost to themselves. After their reception at Aras an Uachtarain, we were delighted to welcome the group to Castleknock Parish Centre for lunch (organised and served by members of our MU Branch), and we were able to hear something of the personal stories connected with the tragedy. After a group photograph and a brief visit to St Brigid's church, the group (suitably replete) boarded their minibus for the long drive back north.

A Prayer for Christian Aid Week

God of all compassion
Whose Son Jesus Christ laid down his life for us:
May we who seek to follow you
Be inspired to change the world for good,
So that our brothers and sisters in need
May glimpse in us the hope of justice
And the love of Jesus,
Who is alive and reigns with you
In the unity of the Holy Spirit,
One God, now and for ever. Amen.

We can help change the world
