Rector Writes
Dear Friends,
Recently I read an interesting article in the Irish Times entitled ‘Sacred Space’. It described how many Churches, parishes and religious leaders are now using websites to reach out to their followers, especially those who, for one reason or another, are unable to attend church services regularly.
As we know, the last twenty years have seen an explosion of new forms of communications technology – mobile phones, e-mail and the internet have revolutionised the ways in which we interact with one other. Today we live in an age of browsers, people flick from one television channel to another, click through image-based web pages and flip through glossy magazines. Therefore, the Christian Churches have to find fresh, new ways to communicate their message. At the end of St. Matthew’s Gospel we read that Jesus commissioned his disciples to preach the Good News to the whole world. Thus, in other words, communication is central to mission.
With regard to our own parish, I’ve recently asked the members of our Communications Committee to produce a leaflet which would contain information about the Parish (service times etc.). We hope to distribute the latter to hotels, guest houses and tourist information points. In addition, we now have multi-lingual welcome posters in St. Brigid’s Church.
All of these (websites, posters and parish magazines) have a valuable role to play in communications. Of course, ‘word-of-mouth’ reputation is also important – just think how easy it is for a local school, hospital or garage to gain a good or a bad reputation, simply by friends chatting to one other!
I would like to take this opportunity to thank all those who help with communications in our parish – those who prepare and distribute the parish magazine, the members of our ‘Welcome Team’, the parish webmaster and so many others – your help is greatly appreciated.
You will notice some changes to this month’s magazine - for example, I’ve included a reference section in the centre of the magazine which you can pull out and keep for the coming month. It contains details of:
Parish Officials
Services
Readings
The Anglican Cycle of Prayer
The Diocesan Cycle of Prayer
Rotas
Please let me know your thoughts on this and, if you can help with the parish magazine in any way, we would be delighted to hear from you.
I would encourage you to use both the Anglican and the Diocesan Cycle of Prayer in your own personal prayers throughout the week. Please pray also at this time for our parish and for our parochial nominators (James Anderson, Anne Cadoo, Rachel Devlin and Frank Robinson) as they meet with the Diocesan nominators and the Archbishop to choose a new rector.
Pray too for Andrew, Susan, Rachel, Patrick and Ciara, as they settle in to Tullow Parish.
Yours in Christ,
Elaine

International Food Sampling
This year, to celebrate Pentecost (on Sunday 31st May), which brought together people of many languages, we held a special time of international food sampling in Castleknock Parish Centre. This was a great opportunity for us to celebrate the rich cultural diversity within our parish and enjoy some fellowship too.
Many thanks to all those who kindly agreed to prepare food from their home country - it was delicious! Thanks also to those who helped to prepare the hall, and to those who served tea and coffee. Particular thanks to the children of Castleknock N.S. who helped to make lots of beautiful flags to decorate the hall!
