Rector Writes

Dear Friends,

There’s a great story about a man whose marriage was ending- he had fallen out of love with his wife. One day, out his office window, he caught a quick glimpse of a woman who seemed to him to be the most beautiful he had ever seen and decided that this was his chance to find a new love. So he quickly ran out and followed the woman until at last she paused at a shop window. He ran up to her and as she turned to face him, he found himself looking into the face of … his wife.

For me, that sums up the message of Easter: the transforming of people and situations that appear to be hopeless and beyond help. It’s about seeing the familiar places and people around us with a fresh vision and realising that nothing and no one is beyond the power of God to change and be changed. As I write this, we celebrated the most wonderful Easter vigil at St. Thomas’. As darkness gathers we lit the Easter bonfire outside, and brought that light into the dark church; symbol of God’s power which raised Jesus from the dead, and still brings new light and new life to his people today. Easter means hope: a true and living hope for a world which can seem hopeless.

A very happy Easter to you all

Announcements

New Chalice bearers:
Following a training night, we commissioned 12 new chalice bearers, 8 for Castleknock and 4 for Clonsilla at a recent Sunday morning service. It is good to see so many coming forward for this important public ministry, which makes clear in a very visible way, our belief in the ministry of all believers.

Mothering Sunday:
Mothering Sunday was once again celebrated in great style in both parishes as our Sunday Clubs led the services and distributed Mothering Sunday gifts. Our emphasis was not just on Christian family life, but also on the Church as our Mother.

Castleknock Easter Vestry:
At the Castleknock Easter Vestry on March 9th, elections were held not just for the Select Vestry but also for Parochial Nominators and Diocesan Synod Representatives. We welcome as Churchwardens, Sam Mckeever and John Patton (Castleknock), Charles Mutawe and Michael Hensey (Mulhuddart). The Glebe wardens are Gordon Kellett and David Smyth. We want to thank all who have served over the past year; especially to retiring wardens Sadie Smullen, Gladys Hutchinson and Rachel Devlin. See later in this issue for full details of both Easter Vestries.

Daffodil Day:
A well supported coffee morning raised over €1300 for the Irish Cancer Society. Thanks to all those who supported and baked on the day, and to the serving team.

Women’s World Day of Prayer:
Some of our members attended the annual ecumenical prayer service, held this year in St. Mary of the Servants, Blakestown.

School News:
Congratulations to Ms O’Connell’s 4th and 5th class who reached the final of the Irish Aid Our World Global schools awards. Over 1500 schools entered, and Castleknock NS finished in the top ten – a wonderful achievement for the team, who created the project entitled “Powerful Poverty”. Humour

A minister was completing a temperance sermon. With great emphasis he said, "If I had all the beer in the world, I'd take it and pour it into the river."

With even greater emphasis he said, "And if I had all the wine in the world, I'd take it and pour it into the river."

And then finally, shaking his fist in the air, he said, "And if I had all the whiskey in the world, I'd take it and pour it into the river."

Sermon complete, he sat down.

The song leader stood very cautiously and announced with a smile, nearly laughing, "For our closing song, Let us sing Hymn #365, "Shall We Gather at the River."

Are you planning your wedding?

Are you aware of the changes in Irish Marriage Law?

It is now a requirement that you give three months notice of your intention to marry. This notice must be given in person to the Registrar of Marriages in your area.

There is at present a waiting list of over four months for an appointment.

It is never too early to give notice, please give adequate time to complete the process i.e. more than seven months.

For advice please ring the Rector in advance of this seven month period.
