Rector Writes
Dear Friends,
As I write these words I have been watching, as I’m sure many of you have, the bloody crackdown of dissent in Burma by its military rulers. At the forefront of these protests have been the Buddhist monks, dressed in their distinctive saffron robes, who are greatly revered by the population. It’s a powerful symbol of religious leadership expressed not through power of force, but through moral living and the power of non violence and reconciliation. It also illustrates powerfully for us in Ireland what the role of religious communities should be in our own country.
The mixing of religious values and the politics of power has often had disastrous results in our own country and abroad. Narrow-mindedness, intolerance, repression of dissent, have too often been the results. Theocracies have rarely been good for the general population, never mind minorities. However, when secularists call for the complete separation of Church and State, with religion confined to the private and personal sphere, this too is to miss the positive role that religious communities play in society. All societies require a moral framework of human rights and dignities, equality for all and freedom of speech. These are the values that democracies have gained from religious communities and beliefs, and those same religious communities have a right and a duty to speak out when that basic respect is denied, especially to the powerless and those who have no voice. Religion cannot be confined to the personal and the private: if we’re serious about our faith it affects every aspect of life.
Those Buddhist monks are powerful witnesses to the power of non violence, forgiveness and reconciliation. These are values that can only be repressed for a limited time: eventually, truth and justice will prevail over bitterness and destruction. In our own lives, if we claim to be Christians, do we show that same sense of forgiveness and reconciliation: or have allowed bitterness and anger to overtake us, which harms not only the object of our anger, but also eats away at our own soul?
Yours in Christ
Andrew

Announcements
Summer Club:
Once again our parish summer club was great success. The theme this year was Waste Watchers, looking both at the life of Jesus, and also our concern for the environment. 25 children took part and everyone thoroughly enjoyed themselves. Thanks to Elaine and all the leadership team for their hard work.
Harvests:
At the time of writing, we are looking forward to welcoming Fr. Tony Gavan from Kilbride parish as our harvest preacher in Mulhuddart at which we hope a large number of the new local community will attend. On 14th October, we will welcome Rev. Kevin Brew, Howth, as our preacher in Clonsilla and Castleknock. Please note last month’s date of 7th October was an error.
Mulhuddart:
Thank you to all who have maintained Mulhuddart grounds through the summer. The winter schedule of services begins in October, with services on the 3rd Sunday of the month only.
Healing service:
A reminder that prayer and the laying on of hands for healing takes place every 3rd Sunday following 11.30am service in Castleknock.
St. Mary’s Clonsilla:
Thank you for Eddie and Valerie Greene for giving us a fridge for use in the Parish Centre—this fits very nicely under the work top of the tea station. The Centre has been repainted and is looking very clean and fresh. Please remember that is Centre is available for small groups and meetings.
Congratulations:
Congratulations to Maedhbh (our organist) and Ronan on the birth of a baby girl, Emily, recently.
